The opportunity? The Port of Green Bay is working to redevelop a decommissioned power plant site into a state-of-the-art port facility. This project is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to expand the port’s capacity, create family-supporting jobs, transform the Greater Green Bay region, and grow its economy.
How would the project benefit the region? The $53 million redevelopment of this strategic and desirable location for active port uses is estimated to generate an economic impact of $87 million in the first five years. It will also enable the City of Green Bay to acquire downtown riverfront property to revitalize and transform a neighborhood brownfield site into a multi-use public destination.
What makes this investment possible? Brown County has acquired the property and committed $3.9 million in funding for this project. In addition, the county has secured a Wisconsin Neighborhood Investment Fund grant ($15M), two Wisconsin Department of Transportation Harbor Assistance Program grants ($1.1M and $1.0M), and a USDOT Port Infrastructure Development Program grant ($10.2 M). The county can fully fund the project and complete construction by 2026 with additional federal funding.
What’s next? The Port of Green Bay submitted a FY 2024 USDOT Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) Grant Program application earlier this year and awaits an award announcement.
