The opportunity?
The City of Waukesha wants to make the community more walkable and bikeable, promote active transportation, and improve community connectivity. There is an opportunity to provide safer access to schools and local amenities in the area and enable citizens to walk or bike to school, recreational activities, and other daily destinations.
What is the “fix,” and how does it benefit the community?
The city seeks to address two known gaps in the bicycle and pedestrian trail network by constructing bridges over Highway 18/Highway 59 and Highway 18/Highway 59/Highway 164. The development of this infrastructure would provide safer options for pedestrians and cyclists, separating them from vehicular traffic. This project would also increase affordable transportation options, enhance connectivity in the area, encourage residents to walk and bike to destinations, and potentially work to reduce traffic congestion.
What makes this first step possible?
This Waukesha bike and pedestrian project received a $1,116,800 federal infrastructure law Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) discretionary planning grant.
What’s next?
The city will use the grant funds to begin the planning and design phase of the two bicycle and pedestrian bridges.
