The opportunity?
Riffey Transload provides bulk and flatbed transportation throughout the continental 48 states, plus truck-to-rail, rail-to-truck, and truck-to-truck transloading from their Reedsburg facility. The company, served by the Wisconsin & Southern Railroad (WSOR), sought to reduce transportation costs for its food products industry customers in South Central Wisconsin.
What was the “fix” and how does it benefit industries?
Riffey constructed a new trackside storage building at its Reedsburg transload terminal. The new hoop barn-type storage building enables Riffey Transload to reduce its customers’ transportation costs. It will also help Riffey strengthen connections between America’s Dairy farmers and feed ingredients.
What made the investment possible?
Riffey Transload was awarded $825,267 as part of the Freight Railroad Infrastructure Improvement Program (FRIIP) grants. According to the WisDOT website, FRIIP loans cover up to 100% of the cost of rail projects that connect an industry to the national railroad system, improve transportation efficiency, safety, and intermodal freight movement, accomplish line rehabilitation, and develop the economy.
Riffey Transload invested more than $300,000 in track, storage, and other facility improvements. With the FRIIP loan, the company completed the new storage facility in the summer of 2024.
