The opportunity?
The Main Street Bridge on WIS 19 over the Rock River in Watertown, also known as the Cole Memorial Bridge, has been an essential part of the community’s history since 1931. Due to its age, it has developed structural issues, requiring expedited reconstruction.
What is the “fix,” and how does it benefit the community?
Replacing this deteriorating structure is essential to enhancing safety for vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. The Main Street Bridge is a critical link between Watertown’s east and west sides. The new bridge will facilitate better transportation and connectivity within the city and provide easier access to businesses and services on both sides of the river. This project is part of transforming Main Street and the Historical District into vibrant, community-centered spaces, promoting economic growth and community engagement.
What makes the investment possible?
This $4.4 million project—originally scheduled to commence in 2026 but underway now—has moved forward due to collaboration between local, state, and federal officials and earmarked funds. The Wisconsin 2023-25 budget included $2 million to help the city keep a historic building that is connected to the old bridge, and Senator Baldwin secured a $3.8 million federal earmark for the bridge’s replacement. Without the joint efforts, WisDOT may not have been able to begin construction in 2024.
What’s next?
Work on the project is underway. WisDOT anticipates the new bridge will be open to the public in the fall of 2024.
