The Situation
Sturgeon Bay’s Nautical Drive waterfront area has long been underutilized, with an aging boat launch, a deteriorating dock wall, and limited public access hindering recreation, boating, and tourism in this key Door County hub. The prominent city-owned site serves local boaters and visitors and could potentially host events, but faces structural risks from Lake Michigan wave action and heavy use. City leaders say the project would expand public access and improve use of the waterfront.

What is the “fix,” and how does it benefit the community and the state?
A proposed project reimagines the space with a reinforced dock wall, modernized boat launch and docks, a pavilion for boat storage and instruction space, enhanced pedestrian access to trails, safety lighting, and features to withstand storms and erosion. These improvements will boost boating safety, enhance usability for fishing/charter operations, and create an inviting public space that supports Sturgeon Bay’s tourism economy by generating visitor spending at nearby businesses, while aligning with Door County’s maritime heritage and state water recreation goals.

What makes the investment possible?
The City of Sturgeon Bay has been awarded more than $700,000 in grants: a $518,414 Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Recreational Boating Facilities grant and an additional $188,000 Wisconsin Department of Transportation Harbor Assistance Program grant. The city is working with the Sail Training Foundation to make that organization responsible for the cost of the new pavilion.

Next Steps
The project is now in the concept phase. Once the final design is complete, the city will solicit bids and seek Common Council approval.
